From the Early Cycladic period to the establishment of the capital town Hermoupolis and today, Syros has history so long that is lost in the mists of time. The majestic neoclassical Hermoupolis is dedicated to Hermes the ancient god of commerce. The founders of the town were refugees who fled to Syros from Chios, Psara, Kasos, Smyrna  Asia Minor and other places. A golden era began. The economic bloom of Hermoupolis created a glorious town, the first port as well as the leading commercial, industrial and cultural center of the independent Greek state in the 19th century. The finest architects of Europe designed and built unique buildings to such an extent that today Hermoupolis boasts more neoclassical treasures than any other city in Greece.
Right across the hill, Ano Syros with narrow cobblestone streets, small white Cycladic houses, arches and covered walkways and Catholic churches follow the standards of medieval settlements. Built amphitheatrically, the exterior walls of all houses formed a fortress keeping the residents safe from raids. Countless steps lead to the top where the Catholic Church of Saint George is situated.
Sand, pebbles and crystal clear waters, organized or ideal for water sports or more private and unspoiled beaches, Syros has them all. The southern part of the island boasts of popular and organized beaches such as Finikas, Agathopes, Galissas, Kini, Delfini, Megas Gialos, Vari, Azolimnos. The northern part of Syros is where the unspoilt more private beaches are. Access by boat from Kini or organized guided hikes from Apano Meria.
